North Deer Island Pirate Shipwrecks

North Deer Island (and South Deer Island) are low marsh islands in central Galveston Bay, surrounded by oyster reefs and shifting channels. Lafitte-era pirates and later smugglers used the Deer Island chain as cover from naval patrols. The Rocker Box and W.C. Jameson compilations describe three pirate vessels going down with treasure cargoes near North Deer Island. Shallow water and soft bottom make wreck locations difficult to hold in place — storms routinely reshape the bay floor. Modern oyster boats and duck hunters report occasional iron fittings and timbers, but no authenticated bullion recovery. Coordinates center on North Deer Island in Galveston Bay.
