Newton Courthouse Gold — Sanders Raid

Lost Treasure AL • Dale / Coffee County County
Description
1864 legend of county gold and valuables buried or hidden when Colonel Joseph Sanders' Confederate partisans attacked the Newton courthouse during the closing phase of the Civil War.
Historical Notes
In 1864 Colonel Joseph Sanders led a Confederate partisan raid on Newton, the Dale County seat. Local officials and residents allegedly hid courthouse funds and private gold rather than lose it to raiders or advancing Union troops. Digital Alabama preserves the tale that bullion and strongbox valuables were never fully recovered after the attack and subsequent chaos in southeast Alabama. Newton remains the Dale County government center; courthouse square folklore still draws occasional treasure inquiries.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
