New Echota Treaty Gold — Gordon County

Lost Treasure GA • Gordon County County
Description
Capital of the Cherokee Nation legend — gold and valuables hurriedly concealed around New Echota after the 1835 Treaty of New Echota triggered the Georgia land lottery and Trail of Tears.
Historical Notes
New Echota served as the Cherokee capital where the controversial 1835 removal treaty was signed. The discovery of gold in north Georgia intensified state pressure to extinguish Cherokee land titles. History Cherokee links the Treaty of New Echota directly to the treasure-tunnel and Red Bank cache legends. New Echota State Historic Site marks council houses and print shops where leaders debated removal. Folklore holds that families departing New Echota buried household gold in the surrounding Calhoun area rather than surrender it to lottery winners and militia.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
