Description
Southeast Kansas legend of a buffalo hunter hiding gold coins in buffalo-hide saddlebags where the Neosho Trail crosses the river between Baxter Springs and Coffeyville.
Historical Notes
The Neosho Trail connected Baxter Springs and Coffeyville across the Cherokee Strip border country. A buffalo hunter reportedly cached saddlebags of gold where the trail forded the river. Post–Civil War hide hunters and cattle trails made Labette and Cherokee counties rich in outlaw and hunter cache folklore. The site lies in the same region as the Dalton Gang's 1892 Coffeyville raid — another anchor of Kansas treasure-hunting tradition.
