Nemaha River Cache — Nemaha County

Lost Treasure KS • Nemaha County County
Description
1850s legend of Massachusetts gold miners burying a powder can of California nuggets on the Nemaha River bank at extinct Richmond — one partner murdered in a saloon fight; the survivor fled and never returned.
Historical Notes
Two young men returning from California split from a rowdy wagon train at Julesburg and pushed east alone with a lightly loaded wagon and a strong team. They reached Richmond on the west bank of the Nemaha River south fork, a pro-slavery trail town on the Fort Leavenworth–Fort Kearny military road. Before visiting the combined store and saloon, they buried their gold in a powder can on the hillside east of the ford, aligned with light from the saloon window and a large riverside tree. In town they encountered two ruffians who had trailed them from Julesburg. One miner was shot dead; the survivor escaped in darkness, left the gold, and fled toward St. Joseph. He married his partner's sister, enlisted in the Civil War, and died without reclaiming the cache. His sons searched with bayonets in the 1880s; pioneer freighter W.D. Ripey later tried with a worn map from the family. Floods, cleared timber, and vanished landmarks defeated every attempt. An abandoned well was the last visible trace of Richmond. Coordinates mark the historic ford country north of Seneca.
