Neches River Mouth Jean Lafitte Treasure — Jefferson County

Lost Treasure TX • Jefferson County County
Description
Beaumont legend that Jean Lafitte buried treasure at or near the mouth of the Neches River where it enters Sabine Lake — the coastal terminus of Southeast Texas smuggling routes.
Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Jefferson County compilation states Jean Lafitte buried treasure at or near the mouth of the Neches River. Beaumont developed at this freshwater-saltwater junction where the Neches and Sabine systems meet the Gulf. Historian W. T. Block noted that by 1900 every bayou and shellbank along the Sabine or Neches Rivers or Sabine Lake had its own buried-gold tale, though oral Lafitte traditions were never fully recorded. Beaumont's "Emerald of the Neches" heritage ties the city to this buccaneer folklore. Coordinates approximate the Neches River mouth at Sabine Lake east of downtown Beaumont.
