Muleshoe Cattle Trail Strongbox — Bailey County

Lost Treasure TX • Bailey County County
Description
Bailey County legend of a cattle-trail strongbox buried near Muleshoe — the northwestern South Plains rail town named for the distinctive brand of the XIT Ranch.
Historical Notes
Bailey County organized in 1919 with Muleshoe as county seat after the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway crossed the far northwestern Llano Estacado. The town name honors the muleshoe-shaped brand of the XIT Ranch that once dominated the region. Cattle-trail and shipping-point folklore often places buried strongboxes where trail bosses converted herds to rail consignments. Bailey County borders New Mexico along the western South Plains. Coordinates mark downtown Muleshoe in Bailey County northwest of Lubbock.
