Historical Notes
The Rocker Box Carbon County compilation records several caches of gold ore buried in or near Muddy Gap by miners before an Indian attack — never recovered. Muddy Gap sits on U.S. 287 near the route emigrants followed toward South Pass — the gentle Rocky Mountain crossing Edwin Bryant called the backbone of North America in July 1846. Coordinates mark Muddy Gap junction west of the Sweetwater country. BLM and ranch lands — legend only.
