Moss Creek — Llano County Placer Gold

Gold Mining Site TX • Llano County County
Description
Moss Creek near Kingsland and the east base of Packsaddle Mountain. Named for the Moss ranching family whose 1873 pursuit of Apache raiders led to the Battle of Packsaddle Mountain — fine placer gold in creek gravels above the Llano River.
Historical Notes
Moss Creek lies on the Kingsland topo sheet near Honey Creek, the Llano River, and the eastern foothills of Packsaddle Mountain. In 1873 James R. Moss and neighbors pursued horse raiders from the Moss Ranch country along Beaver Creek and Legion Valley twenty-five miles to the mountain summit. The creek drains into the Llano River reach between Packsaddle and Kingsland where regional guides document recreational gold panning. Fine flakes concentrate in gravel bars and granite cracks after spring runoff. Related treasure entry "Moss Ranch 1873 Indian Raid Pioneer Strongbox" documents frontier folklore in the same country.
