Description
Northern Virginia legend of Col. John S. Mosby burying a $350,000 sack of looted jewelry and specie between two pines marked with X — seized during the March 1863 Fairfax Court House raid.
Historical Notes
On March 9, 1863 Mosby's Rangers captured Union General Edwin H. Stoughton at Fairfax Court House along with 58 horses and, per legend, plunder Union troops had taken from Southern homes. Warned of a patrol, Mosby and a sergeant buried the sack between two pines en route to Culpeper. Folklore says men sent to recover it were hanged; Mosby allegedly referenced valuable stuff still in the countryside on his deathbed. Legends of America places the cache between Norman and Culpeper near modern Route 522. No documented 1863 hangings corroborate the tale, but metal-detector hunts continue.
