Mormon Mill Hamilton Creek Colony Cache — Burnet County

Lost Treasure TX • Burnet County County
Description
Mormon Mill legend of a Lyman Wight colony strongbox at Hamilton Creek falls — the 1851 Mormon settlement south of Burnet before the Highland Lakes were dammed.
Historical Notes
Lyman Wight led a Mormon colony to the falls of Hamilton Creek in 1851, establishing Mormon Mill about ten miles south of Burnet. A congregation met at Mormon Mill in 1851; Wight had earlier moved his colony from Zodiac in Gillespie County. Communal mill-site folklore sometimes places buried specie when frontier colonies dissolve. Mormon Mill is a Burnet County ghost town listed by The Rocker Box; Hamilton Creek now flows into Lake Lyndon B. Johnson. Coordinates approximate the historic Mormon Mill site south of Burnet in Burnet County.
