Description
Solomon River legend of Spaniards or California miners throwing a treasure chest into the river near Morland during an Indian attack — later stranded when the channel shifted.
Historical Notes
Near Morland in Graham County, folklore tells of a party attacked while carrying a chest of treasure along the Solomon River. The chest was thrown into the water; when the river changed course the hoard was left under dry ground. Some versions value the cache at $400,000 in gold bars. Northwest Kansas river-treasure tales often cite shifting Solomon River channels as the reason caches remain lost.
