Moody Train $80,000 Gold — Failed Robbery

Lost Treasure MT • Beaverhead County County
Description
December 1863 legend of outlaws wounding themselves while failing to rob the Moody freight train carrying about $80,000 in gold over the divide toward Red Rock and the Snake River diggings.
Historical Notes
TreasureNet road-agent research cites the Moody Train as a soft-target alternative to stagecoaches during the Plummer era; robbers lost only personal effects when the holdup failed. The route from Bannack over the divide toward Red Rock linked southwest Montana camps to Snake River placers. Some writers speculate wounded outlaws cached personal gold before dying, though the main train shipment was not taken.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
