Montezuma Treasure — Three Lakes Pond

Lost Treasure UT • Kane County County
Description
Kanab legend of Aztec warriors fleeing Cortés with Montezuma's hoard north to southern Utah — billions in gold rumored at the end of an underwater tunnel beneath Three Lakes pond, guarded by curse and rare amber snails.
Historical Notes
Folklore says trusted Aztecs carried imperial treasure north; Freddie Crystal searched Johnson Canyon in the 1920s, and later hunters focused on submerged caverns near Kanab. Brandt Child's 1980s dive teams reported ghostly guardians and gold on drill bits before state protection of endangered Kanab amber snails halted pumping operations. KSL filmmakers and Visit Southern Utah document a century of Montezuma treasure hunts at Three Lakes.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
