Montezuma Mine — Shafter District

Gold Mining Site TX • Presidio County County
Description
The Montezuma Mine in the Shafter Mining District produced lead-silver ore with gold byproduct — one of fourteen satellite mines around the Presidio Mine that shipped concentrates to El Paso smelters.
Historical Notes
TSHA records the Montezuma Mine in Section 319, Block 7, Houston and Texas Central Railway Survey operating in 1890–1891 and again in 1901–1902. Lead-silver ore was mined with modest gold traces as byproduct. During World War I high zinc prices brought brief reopenings of Montezuma and the nearby Chinati Mine. The district's gold occurs in silver-lead-zinc lodes, not as free placer. Related entries: "Presidio Mine — Shafter Mining District" and "Chinati Mine — Shafter District." Private mining land — no casual panning. Coordinates approximate the Montezuma Mine in the Chinati Mountains southeast of El Paso.
