Mohegan Bluff Money Bluff Treasure

Lost Treasure RI • Washington County County
Description
Block Island legend of a huge treasure buried at Mohegan Bluff — once nicknamed "Money Bluff" because islanders were certain pirate gold lay beneath the clay cliffs.
Historical Notes
Mohegan Bluff rises on Block Island's southern shore above the Atlantic surf. Nineteenth-century islanders called the headland Money Bluff, convinced a vast hoard lay below the clay banks. One tradition traces the loot to French privateers who abandoned a Block Island base in 1689; others cite Kidd or Joe Bradish.
