Mogollon Gold-Silver District — Catron County

Gold Mining Site NM • Catron County County
Description
The Mogollon (Baldy) mining district — Catron County's famous gold-silver camp in the Mogollon Mountains with millions of ounces of historic silver and substantial gold byproduct.
Historical Notes
Mogollon was established in the 1870s after Sergeant James C. Cooney discovered gold and silver ore. The district became one of New Mexico's wildest mountain camps, producing gold, silver, and copper from steep Mogollon Range veins. The town sits in a narrow canyon in the Gila National Forest. Access is seasonal via NM 159; winter snow often closes the road. Active exploration projects continue to evaluate district mineralization. Coordinates mark Mogollon in Catron County at roughly 6,800 feet elevation.
