Mission Santísimo Nombre de María Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Houston County County
Description
East Texas legend of mission valuables lost when flood destroyed Santísimo Nombre de María near the Neches River in 1692.
Historical Notes
Santísimo Nombre de María was established in 1690 a few months after San Francisco de los Tejas, closer to the Neches River. A 1692 flood destroyed the mission; friars returned to San Francisco de los Tejas before both sites were abandoned in 1693. A state historical marker four miles east of Weches on Texas 21 commemorates the mission. Folklore imagines church goods swept into the Neches bottoms or buried beforehand — a common East Texas treasure motif. Coordinates approximate the Weches historical marker area in Houston County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
