Mission Santa María de los Cíbolos Treasure Legend — Shafter

Lost Treasure TX • Presidio County County
Description
Presidio County legend of a Spanish mission cache near Santa María de la Redonda de los Cíbolos at Shafter — a La Junta mission abandoned around 1726.
Historical Notes
Santa María de la Redonda de los Cíbolos was founded around 1715 near what is now Shafter in Presidio County. It was partially abandoned during Indian hostilities and finally deserted around 1726. The Cíbolos mission lay on the principal Spanish travel route from northern New Spain to New Mexico. Regional folklore describes sacramental silver and trade goods cached when friars fled Apache attacks. Coordinates approximate the Shafter mining-community area in northern Presidio County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
