Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá Treasure Legend — Menard

Lost Treasure TX • Menard County County
Description
Menard County legend of mission church plate and mining samples buried after the 1758 destruction of Santa Cruz de San Sabá — the most famous massacre in Texas mission history.
Historical Notes
Santa Cruz de San Sabá was founded in 1757 to Christianize Lipan Apaches and support mining prospects. On March 16, 1758, Comanches and Norteños burned the mission and killed eight residents, including fathers Alonso Giraldo de Terreros and José de Santiesteban Aberín. The attack ended Spain's Apache alliance strategy on the San Saba River. Folklore describes friars burying sacramental silver and mineral samples before the raid. Related entry: "Lost San Saba Mine (Bowie Mine)" focuses on the separate mining legend. Coordinates mark the Presidio San Luis de las Amarillas / mission historic site near Menard.
