Mission San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Menard County County
Description
Hill Country legend of a Spanish mission cache at San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz — founded in 1762 for Apaches after the San Sabá massacre.
Historical Notes
San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz was established in 1762 on the upper Nueces River near present Camp Wood to serve Apache converts after the 1758 San Sabá disaster. It operated alongside Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria del Cañón until both closed in 1768. The missions were meant to keep Apaches away from San Antonio. When Spain abandoned the strategy, folklore holds that friars buried mission goods rather than haul them back through contested country. Coordinates approximate the Camp Wood area in western Menard County.
