Description
Queen of the Missions legend of buried granary specie and church plate hidden when Apache raids threatened San José — the best-preserved San Antonio mission.
Historical Notes
Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was founded in 1720 and moved to its present site in 1739. The stone church was completed in 1782; the mission was secularized in 1824. San José was the most prosperous San Antonio mission, with extensive ranching and workshop economies. Treasure tradition cites granary strongboxes and liturgical silver buried in the walled compound during Apache scares of the 1760s–1770s. Coordinates mark Mission San José in San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
