Mission San Francisco Xavier de Horcasitas Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Milam County County
Description
Central Texas legend of abandoned mission silver near San Francisco Xavier de Horcasitas on the San Gabriel River — part of the failed 1746–1755 San Xavier mission complex.
Historical Notes
The San Xavier missions were founded in 1746 on the San Gabriel River: San Francisco Xavier de Horcasitas, San Ildefonso, and Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. Apache raids, governor opposition, and drought ended the experiment by 1755. Related entry: "San Gabriel River Spanish Mission Silver — Bastrop" in the Austin-area import. Horcasitas folklore specifically imagines mine samples and church plate buried when friars fled to the Guadalupe River (1756–1758) before final abandonment. Coordinates approximate the San Gabriel River near Rockdale in Milam County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
