Mission San Francisco de los Tejas (1690) Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Houston County County
Description
First East Texas mission legend of buried Spanish church wealth near San Francisco de los Tejas — founded in 1690 after the La Salle expedition alarmed Spain.
Historical Notes
San Francisco de los Tejas, founded in 1690 near present Augusta in Houston County, was Spain's first mission in East Texas. It was abandoned in 1693 amid disease and Indian resistance, then re-established in 1716 and eventually relocated to San Antonio as Mission Espada. Mission Tejas State Park near Weches preserves a 1934 log chapel representation. East Texas treasure lore often places sacramental silver buried when friars fled the 1693 withdrawal. Coordinates approximate San Pedro Creek east of Augusta per recent scholarship cited in the Texas Almanac.
