Mission San Francisco de los Neches Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Cherokee County County
Description
Cherokee County legend of a Spanish mission cache at San Francisco de los Neches — the 1721 successor to the 1690 Tejas mission on the Neches River.
Historical Notes
Nuestro Padre San Francisco de los Tejas was re-established in 1716 and moved in 1721 to the east bank of the Neches in Cherokee County, renamed San Francisco de los Neches. A marker on Texas 21 west of Alto marks the site. The mission was among three Querétaro missions removed to San Antonio in 1730–1731 (becoming Mission Espada). Legend holds that friars buried mission treasury items rather than transport them on the long march southwest. Coordinates approximate the historical marker west of Alto, Cherokee County.
