Mission San Clemente (1684) Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Concho County County
Description
West Texas legend tied to the short-lived 1684 San Clemente mission near the Concho–Colorado confluence — where thousands of Indians were baptized before Apache raids forced abandonment.
Historical Notes
Juan Domínguez de Mendoza established San Clemente on March 16, 1684, near the junction of the Colorado (then Río San Clemente) and Concho rivers. The mission lasted only until May 1, 1684, when Apache hostility ended the experiment. Records show thousands of baptisms in weeks of operation. Treasure tradition imagines hurried burial of mission supplies and Mendoza expedition trade goods when the Apache forced retreat. Multiple markers in Concho and Runnels counties commemorate uncertain exact locations. Coordinates approximate the Concho County historical marker north of Millersview on FM 2134.
