Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Refugio County County
Description
Refugio legend of Karankawa mission offerings and colonial church plate buried near Nuestra Señora del Refugio — the last Spanish mission founded in Texas (1793).
Historical Notes
Nuestra Señora del Refugio was founded in 1793 for Karankawa peoples and absorbed Rosario Mission survivors in 1805. It was secularized in the 1830 Mexican period and damaged during the Texas Revolution. Related entry: "Mission River Spanish Galleon Wreck — Refugio" covers a separate ship legend. The Refugio mission tale focuses on church goods buried when Karankawa converts dispersed or when Mexican secularization arrived. Coordinates mark Refugio town and the mission historic site in Refugio County.
