Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Goliad County County
Description
Goliad legend of mission granary specie and church plate buried near Espíritu Santo — moved permanently to the San Antonio River in 1749 after earlier sites at Matagorda Bay and Mission Valley.
Historical Notes
Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga was founded in 1722 near Matagorda Bay, moved to the Guadalupe River in 1726, and settled permanently at Goliad in 1749. It was among the last Texas missions secularized (1830). The mission operated ranchos including Tonkawa Bank near Victoria. Related entry: "Goliad Presidio Treasury Legend." Espíritu Santo folklore separately describes mission-era caches in the granary and irrigation complex across from Presidio La Bahía. Coordinates mark the reconstructed mission at Goliad State Park.
