Mission Nuestra Señora de la Luz Treasure Legend — Trinity River

Lost Treasure TX • Liberty County County
Description
Southeast Texas legend of Spanish gold buried near Mission Nuestra Señora de la Luz at the Trinity River mouth — founded in 1756 and abandoned after fifteen years.
Historical Notes
Nuestra Señora de la Luz was founded in 1756 near the mouth of the Trinity River for Orcoquiza Indians. Unhealthful coastal conditions, inadequate support, and shifting frontier strategy ended the mission after about fifteen years. NPS and TSHA note friendly relations with the Orcoquiza and some conversions before Spain ordered withdrawal. Coastal mission folklore often describes church plate buried when friars reluctantly abandoned their converts. Coordinates approximate the lower Trinity River near Liberty in Liberty County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
