Mission Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe — Nacogdoches Treasure Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Nacogdoches County County
Description
Nacogdoches legend of unrecovered mission wealth at Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches — an East Texas mission that operated from 1716 until 1773.
Historical Notes
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches was founded in 1716 and remained in East Texas when other missions relocated to San Antonio. It was abandoned in 1773 when Spain withdrew frontier missions east of the Trinity. A state historical marker in Nacogdoches commemorates the mission. Seventy years of operation and sudden secularization produced folklore of buried church plate and trade silver in the oldest town in Texas. Coordinates mark downtown Nacogdoches where the historical marker stands.
