Mission Navidad de los Cruces Treasure Legend — Presidio

Lost Treasure TX • Presidio County County
Description
La Junta legend of a 1683 mission cache at Navidad de los Cruces on the Rio Grande near Presidio — founded by the Mendoza-López expedition and abandoned by 1688.
Historical Notes
The Mendoza-López expedition camped at a La Junta village on December 29, 1683, named it Navidad de los Cruces, and founded a mission. It lay about four miles north of El Apóstol Santiago along the Rio Grande. La Junta missions were abandoned in 1688 amid regional revolts. Treasure folklore follows the pattern of hurriedly buried expedition supplies and liturgical goods when friars withdrew toward El Paso. Coordinates approximate the La Junta district north of Presidio in Presidio County.
