Mission El Apóstol Santiago Treasure Legend — Presidio

Lost Treasure TX • Presidio County County
Description
Big Bend legend of Spanish mission valuables hidden near El Apóstol Santiago on Alamito Creek — among the earliest missionary efforts in the La Junta de los Ríos district.
Historical Notes
The Mendoza-López expedition founded missions at La Junta in 1683–1684. El Apóstol Santiago stood on Alamito Creek between present-day Presidio and Redford. La Junta is among the oldest continuously farmed lands in Texas. Franciscans returned in 1715 and again petitioned for permanent missions among the La Juntans, who already knew Christianity through migrant labor ties to Spanish settlements south of the Rio Grande. Apache raids periodically forced abandonment. A state historical marker four miles east of Presidio commemorates El Apóstol Santiago. Coordinates approximate that site.
