Miles City Bozeman Stage Line Road Agent Trunk Robbery — Custer County

Lost Treasure MT • Custer County County
Description
Miles City legend of eastern Montana road agents unstrapping a coach trunk worth hundreds of dollars from the rear of a Miles City–Bozeman stage without the driver noticing — one of many unrecovered holdups on the 1877 Yellowstone Valley line.
Historical Notes
The December 17, 1936 Fallon County Times stage-line history reproduced in TreasureNet's Custer Country research describes the Miles City–Bozeman route opened in 1877 after the Sioux campaign that ended at the Little Bighorn. When mine bullion moved on the Miles City line, guards or soldier escorts sometimes accompanied coaches; nonetheless treasure writers record bandits trailing stages and stealing luggage without alerting passengers. Coordinates mark downtown Miles City at the eastern terminus of the historic Bozeman freight corridor. Urban and ranch land — legend only.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
