Midland Oil Boom Specie Cache — Midland County

Lost Treasure TX • Midland County County
Description
Midland legend of petroleum-boom specie buried near the county seat after the Santa Rita and Westbrook fields turned the Permian Basin into a world oil province.
Historical Notes
The 1923 Santa Rita No. 1 discovery on the University of Texas lands in Reagan County and subsequent Westbrook and Big Lake strikes transformed Midland into the administrative capital of the Permian Basin oil industry. Oil-boom folklore often places unrecovered strongboxes where lease brokers, rig contractors, and wildcatters cached cash before bank networks reached the plains. Midland's Petroleum Building and courthouse square preserve boom-era architecture. Related entry: "Big Lake Santa Rita Oil Field Payroll — Reagan County" documents the discovery-well country south of Midland. Coordinates mark downtown Midland in Midland County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
