Midland County legend of a cattle-baron fortune buried on the open range before the oil boom transformed the Permian Basin economy.
Historical Notes
Before oil, Midland County was cattle and sheep country on the High Plains. Open-range barons and trail bosses appear in West Texas treasure guides as figures who buried emergency specie in cedar breaks and draw country. Midland succeeded Colorado City as regional trade center as railroads and later highways converged on the basin. No authenticated baron hoard has been recovered near town. Coordinates approximate ranch country southwest of Midland in Midland County.
