Mexican Caravan Petrified Log Treasure — Bryan

Lost Treasure TX • Brazos County County
Description
Brazos County legend of a pack train attacked on the Old San Antonio Road — survivors buried gold and silver under a petrified log near Bryan before Mexican bandits wiped out the caravan.
Historical Notes
The Old San Antonio Road (Old Spanish Trail) ran from San Antonio east through the Brazos Valley toward Nacogdoches. In the early 1800s the route crossed dangerous Karankawa, Tonkawa, and Comanche country as well as Mexican bandits. Legends of America recounts that a pack train carrying gold and silver was attacked along the road. Before the caravan was destroyed, the survivors unloaded and buried the bullion under a petrified log near Bryan. According to the tale, the treasure has never been recovered. An April 1916 Brazos County newspaper report noted a gentleman coming from New Orleans to dig for buried treasure, reviving decades of local interest. TreasureNet and the Central Texas Treasure Club have discussed the legend. Coordinates mark downtown Bryan on the historic trail corridor.
