The Rocker Box Quay County compilation states Mesa Rica is the burial site of a considerable quantity of gold taken from a wagon train massacre site. Guide to Treasure in New Mexico is among the guidebooks cited for the tale. Wagon-train massacre caches are staples of High Plains treasure tradition from Texas through eastern New Mexico. Mesa Rica rises in the mesa country between Tucumcari and the Texas Panhandle. Coordinates approximate Mesa Rica in Quay County east of Tucumcari.
