Meriwether Lewis Grinder's Stand Mystery Gold

Lost Treasure TN • Lewis County County
Description
Hohenwald legend that Governor Meriwether Lewis carried a secret cache of gold along the Natchez Trace — fueling murder theories after his mysterious 1809 death at Grinder's Stand.
Historical Notes
Meriwether Lewis died October 11, 1809 at Grinder's Stand on the Natchez Trace near present Hohenwald. Official accounts cite suicide; many locals and historians argue murder. Treasure folklore holds that Lewis traveled with undisclosed gold from St. Louis or Louisiana Territory purchases — giving robbers a motive. No treasury shortfall was proven, but the legend persists along the Trace. Meriwether Lewis National Monument and the Natchez Trace Parkway interpret the death site; metal-detector stories occasionally surface in Lewis County oral tradition.
