Melrose legend of a stage-line or ranch payroll buried near the De Baca County railroad town on the Pecos River plain between Fort Sumner and Clovis.
Historical Notes
Melrose developed as a Santa Fe railroad town in eastern De Baca County on the Pecos River drainage. Stage and freight traffic between the Pecos Valley and the High Plains division points at Clovis and Texico moved cash through sparse banking country. Stage-payroll and rail-payroll legends overlap in southeastern New Mexico guidebooks. Melrose lies on the route between Fort Sumner and the Clovis corridor. Coordinates mark Melrose in De Baca County between Clovis and Fort Sumner.
