Medicine Bow Train Robbery Gang Loot

Lost Treasure WY • Carbon County County
Description
August 1878 Elk Mountain legend of Sim Jan's road agents killing two lawmen in Rattlesnake Canyon after a foiled Union Pacific derailment plot — gang loot never fully traced before members scattered.
Historical Notes
Big Nose George Parrot and Frank Tole objected to shooting section men who discovered tampered rails near Medicine Bow; a posse soon tracked the gang to Rattlesnake Canyon at Elk Mountain. Deputy sheriffs were shot and killed; the Union Pacific offered a $10,000 reward as Frank Tole died robbing the Black Hills Stage Line the next month. Treasure lore holds that pay-wagon and stage plunder was cached in Carbon County breaks before Dutch Charlie and Big Nose George were lynched in 1879–1881.
