McKenzie Farm Creek Gold — Richmond County

Lost Treasure NC • Richmond County County
Description
Sandhills legend of the McKenzie family burying valuables under Cartledge Creek bank when Sherman's bummers approached in March 1865 — canvas sack of gold and silver never disturbed.
Historical Notes
J.A. Bolton's Anson/Richmond County storytelling places the McKenzie farm south of the eastern fork of Cartledge Creek near present U.S. 220. Mr. McKenzie hid heirlooms in a hole under the bank when Union foragers neared. Bummers beat McKenzie seeking treasure but fled when a Union rider warned of Home Guard approach. McKenzie died that fall from his injuries; family lore holds the creek cache survived. The tale anchors broader Sandhills Confederate-gold folklore across Richmond and Anson counties.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
