Historical Notes
Alexander McGillivray was a powerful Creek diplomat and trader who bridged Native, Spanish, and American interests. His plantation near Wetumpka on the Coosa River was a center of frontier commerce. Digital Alabama recounts folklore that McGillivray buried or secreted substantial wealth on the plantation grounds. He died in 1793 at Pensacola without heirs to claim rumored hoards. Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson National Historic Park near Wetumpka preserves the era's Creek and colonial history amid ongoing treasure speculation.
