Lost Treasure TX • Hidalgo County County
Description
Hidalgo County legend of contraband specie buried along the Rio Grande near McAllen — the Valley trade city west of Brownsville in the Reynosa corridor.
Historical Notes
McAllen developed in the early twentieth century as a railroad and irrigated-agriculture center in Hidalgo County. The Rio Grande corridor from Brownsville to McAllen carried smuggling traffic under Spanish, Mexican, Confederate, and Prohibition-era rule. Border contraband-cache folklore mirrors Brownsville Channel and Laredo rail-payroll traditions. The McAllen–Reynosa–Hidalgo international bridges remain among the busiest border crossings in Texas. Coordinates mark McAllen in Hidalgo County west of Brownsville.
