Description
Historic cottage gardens and nature preserve on former Allison-Mayfield estate. Gardens planted from the 1870s; city acquired the property in 1971.
Historical Notes
Allison Mayfield, Texas secretary of state and Railroad Commission chairman, developed the lakeside gardens in the early twentieth century. Peacocks and ponds among limestone paths reflect the estate's 1920s–1930s character. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mayfield-Gutsch Gardens. Twenty-one acres of gardens and nature trails remain open to the public.
