Mathias Black Washburn Gold Coins

Lost Treasure ME • Aroostook County County
Description
Washburn legend of timber trader Mathias Black burying about $20,000 in gold coins near Salmon Brook before vanishing into the Aroostook wilderness in the 1830s.
Historical Notes
Mathias Black amassed gold trading timber and salted salmon before settling near Salmon Brook in Washburn. He left for Canada in the 1830s without his saddlebags of gold, which local lore says he buried on his property. Generations of diggers reported strange occurrences at the site, making Black's hoard a persistent Aroostook County ghost-treasure tale.
