Mason Southern Pacific Railroad Payroll — Mason County

Lost Treasure TX • Mason County County
Description
Mason legend of a Southern Pacific Railroad payroll strongbox from the era when Mason became the Hill Country rail hub on the Fredericksburg–Sonora corridor.
Historical Notes
Mason was founded in 1858 and became the Mason County seat. The Southern Pacific line linked the town to Fredericksburg, Sonora, and San Angelo, concentrating weekly ranch and railroad payrolls in cash. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors San Angelo, Uvalde, and Llano border traditions. Mason's courthouse square preserves nineteenth-century commercial architecture along the rail corridor. Coordinates mark downtown Mason at the historic Southern Pacific corridor.
