Mason–Llano Road — Llano River Access — Mason County

Gold Mining Site TX • Mason County County
Description
County-road crossing of the upper Llano River on the Mason–Llano county line. Public river access point on the upland Llano where recreational anglers and prospectors reach granite-shelf country between Mason and Castell.
Historical Notes
The Mason–Llano Road (Maso-Llan Road) crosses the Llano River at approximately 30°40'48" N, 99°02'00" W on the Mason–Llano county line. Texas Parks & Wildlife river maps reference this crossing as a landmark between Mason and the Castell Crossing leased access downstream. This upper-river segment lies within the Llano Uplift, where fine placer gold erodes from Precambrian rocks and concentrates in gravel bars, inside bends, and cracks along the pink granite shelf. TPWD describes the reach approximately 6.6 river miles upstream of Castell Crossing. Prospecting tips: Work gravel after floods when flows drop. Standard pan and classifier are sufficient. Check USGS gage 08150700 (Llano near Mason) for safe wading. Respect private shoreline beyond the road crossing.
