Mason Courthouse Square — Mason

Historic Park TX • Mason County County
Description
Historic county-seat square in Mason; court proceedings were held under a live oak near the town well before the 1869 courthouse, and the 1909 limestone courthouse anchors the plaza today.
Historical Notes
Mason was chosen county seat May 20, 1861, and confirmed August 26, 1869. Early court met under an old live oak on the northeast corner of the square near the town well. The 1877 courthouse fire destroyed early records; the present 1909 courthouse replaced earlier stone buildings. The square remains the civic heart of Mason County ranch country.
