Handbook of Texas notes the Mason Bat Caves among attractions drawing hunters, fishermen, and tourists to Mason County alongside the Fort Mason Museum and Sequist home. Bat caves in the Edwards Plateau–Hill Country transition supplied guano for ammunition during World War I manganese and nitrate booms in central Texas.
