Marshall Ford / Lake Travis Outlaw Cache

Lost Treasure TX • Travis County County
Description
Marshall Ford on the Colorado River — now beneath Lake Travis near Mansfield Dam — folklore of Sam Bass-era outlaw loot and post–Civil War payroll caches hidden in bluffs above the river west of Austin.
Historical Notes
Marshall Ford was the low-water crossing and settlement where the Colorado River narrowed west of Austin. Construction of Mansfield Dam (1937–1941) flooded the ford and created Lake Travis, submerging homesteads, ferries, and bluff caves. Hill Country outlaw lore places Sam Bass associates and post-war bandits along the Colorado between Austin and Marble Falls. Treasure tales describe caches in limestone bluffs and side canyons above Marshall Ford — terrain now partly underwater or in developed lakefront neighborhoods. Searching submerged or shoreline areas may violate park, Corps, and private property rules. Historical legend only; coordinates approximate Mansfield Dam / Marshall Ford historic site.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
